Today, we are sharing a first look at the Orchard Drive Project! While early planning focused on refining the layout and storage details, the final goal for this custom new build laundry room was simple: create a space that works hard and feels authentic to a French Country style home.
Design Intent & Color Palette
From the outset of material selection, the goal was to let texture and craftsmanship do the heavy lifting. Because this laundry room features extensive cabinetry and built-in details, we intentionally chose a restrained, neutral color palette.
To accomplish this, we are color-drenching the room in a warm white and using that same soft neutral across cabinetry, paneling, and trim. This creates continuity and allows the architectural details to stand out quietly rather than compete with one another.

Cabinetry & Material Details
For this custom new-build laundry room, we have selected materials that have long been associated with French Country design.
The cabinetry features inset construction in a slim shaker profile paired with slab-front drawers. This style not only highlights the attention to craft, but also makes wiping down surfaces quick and easy, offering homeowners the best of both thoughtful design and everyday practicality. To further strengthen that sense of craftsmanship, we are carrying vertical paneling from floor to ceiling to introduce another traditional layer alongside the more modern feeling drawer fronts.

For the countertop, we have selected a beautiful soapstone for its durability and natural patina. We have also designed a decorative backsplash to add an elevated, feminine touch to this very hardworking space.
One of our favorite choices we made is painting the hardware to match the cabinetry. It is a small but meaningful detail that lends a traditional utility feel rather than a decorative one. For the drying rod and plumbing fixtures, we chose a beautiful polished nickel. Polished nickel is a living finish that develops subtle variations over time and contributes to the room’s depth.

Underfoot, square terracotta tiles ground the space and reinforce the French country influence. Furthermore, their warmth and texture balance the light cabinetry while offering a durable surface perfectly suited for everyday use.
All together, the layout, materials, and details create a laundry room that supports room to fold, space to move, extensive storage, and durable finishes that can handle the daily routines of this family of four.
This laundry room is just one piece of the Orchard Drive Project series. You can read more about the early planning stages and behind-the-scenes details for this custom new build home in the posts linked below.
